Ben Schumacher

Ben Schumacher is a Canadian artist based in New York whose work examines the “drift” of digital content within social networks and hints at post-humanist ideas of technological progress surpassing the limits of civil flesh. Schumacher came to Istanbul with a plan to uncover a section of discontinued telegraph cables removed from the Black Sea. Once discovered, the cables were cured in an electrolysis bath to get ready to be installed as sculptural ready-mades. His gesture draws attention to the physical infrastructure that exists to uphold the Internet, and it’s similarity to communications technologies from the 1850’s. The cables were once part of a much larger network of communication and Schumacher refers to this history in executing the series in multiple locations globally.
