Jon Rafman

Jon Rafman is a Canadian artist born in Montreal. Inspired by the rich contradictions that technology presents, much of Rafman’s work engages with the relationship of digital media to individual consciousness and social and cultural memory. Persistent themes include the paradoxes of modernity, sources of the contemporary individual’s loneliness and alienation and the shifting boundaries between the virtual and the real (while acknowledging the fading distinctions between the two).

Jon Rafman, born 1981, is a Canadian artist based in Montreal and a graduate of McGill University and the School of Art Institute Chicago. Selected solo exhibitions include The End of The End of The End at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis (2014), You Are Standing In An Open Field at Zach Feuer Gallery in New York (2013), A Man Digging at Seventeen Gallery in London (2013), Jon Rafman at Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2012) and The Nine Eyes of Google Street View at Saatchi Gallery in London (2012). Selected group shows include Art Post-Internet at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing (2014), Speculations on Anonymous Materials at Fridericianum in Kassel (2013), Brand Innovations for Ubiquitous Authorship at Higher Pictures in New York (2012) and Read/Write at 319 Scholes Gallery in New York (2011). He has been shortlisted for the Pinchuk Foundation’s 2014 Future Generation Prize and received the Canada Council for the Art’s 2012 Media Arts Grant.
