Anne De Vries
Anne De Vries is a Dutch artist based between Amsterdam and Berlin. His work investigates the capacity of art to travel beyond the confines of language to capture the metaphysical within a changing contemporary global culture. It exists within the context of an increasingly complex and pervasive media language and the reflections that ensue. The relationship between developments in both technological media and philosophy has been influential to the artist and he is drawn to materials which are artificial yet part of common reality: digitally manipulated photography, CGI video, synthetic materials and stainless steel. De Vries uses sculpture, installation, video, programming, 3D and digital printing to produce alternative forms and narratives, to create space for reflection and imagination and to draw connections be-tween contemporary art, pop culture, advertisement, philosophy and the untitled.
Anne de Vries, born 1977, is a Dutch artist based between Berlin and Amsterdam and a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and The Rijksakademie van Beelende Kunsten. Selected solo shows include Trails of the Hive Mind at Sandy Brown in Berlin (2012) and Trails Rising at The Composing Rooms in London (2012). Selected group shows include Brands – Concept/Affect/Modularity at Salts Basel (2014), Superficial Hygiene at De Hallen (2014), Material Memory at Fluxia Milan (2014), The Dark Cube at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012), 002 Eye Rubs at Elaine, Basel (2012), Based in Berlin at Monbijou Park in Berlin (2011) and READ/WRITE at 319 Scholes in New York (2011). He has shown internationally at art fairs including Art Rotterdam (2014, 2013), FIAC Paris (2013), Art Brussels (2013), Artissima 19 in Italy (2012), Geneva Art Fair (2012), The Armory in New York (as part of Rhizome at the New Museum, 2011) and at Frieze London as part of LuckyPDF’s BYOB project (2011). De Vries has also spoken on panels in Amsterdam (Medium: Photography, FOAM museum, 2014) and Berlin (Accelerationism, Transmediale at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, 2014) and has received both the Artist Pension Fund (2013) and the Dutch Design Award (2010).
