Dot Matrix Synth (2003)
Paul Slocum

The Dot Matrix Synth is a software project I completed in 2003 for the Epson LQ-500 dot matrix printer to transform the printer into a synthesizer. Even older printers like this Epson have a computer built into them, and for this project I wrote new firmware for this printer. The printer-synth makes sound by using the noisy dot matrix printhead, and different tones are created by driving the printhead at different frequencies. Several versions of the Dot Matrix Synth were made – one for live performance with a button control box, one for playing back sequences, and one for installation in a gallery that also prints out images.
